DPP is now Magic Hair Studios

Hey Kids!

After seeing the Zappa epic "Uncle meat" (go see it if you haven't already) it reminded me that I have neglected the SUPER Indie people....

DPP is now Magic Hair Studios and located at the top of Barham Blvd in Universal City, CA.

Like we do every year, we are taking a limited number of Indie projects at reduced rates using the same “hedge deal” format as last year. If you took advantage of this last year you KNOW what a savings it is and just how turn key a post services shop we are.

It works like this: Let us bid on a project – we’ll work with you on a rate - and lock you in to that rate for all of 2009, regardless of WHEN you start production or post.

There are some caveats and conditions to it, but nothing unreasonably restrictive or that doesn’t make sense and we can talk about those when you come in.

Best,
Gaston Hinostroza
Project Development Director
Magic Hair Studios

Call for tech help on indie wrestling movie - NYC

Hi Folks. Captain Zorikh here, maker of "Combat Twister" (http://www.captainzorikh.com/combattwister), which has had screenings at Otto's Shrunken Head and the I-Con Sci-Fi convention and has been invited to the Royal Flush Film Festival. I have been working on my latest movie, "Redemption," and after three months of auditions, workshops, training, and rehearsals (chronicled at http://www.youtube.co... and http://czredemption.b..., my next movie, "Redemption," is ready to shoot, this weekend and next weekend in NYC, Williamsburg, and Connecticut.

This movie aims to do for the sport and martial art of submission grappling what “Rocky” did for boxing, “Karate Kid” did for youth karate, “Bad News Bears” did for little league baseball, and “Role Models” has done for Live Action Role Playing.

The story involves two teams, one of "legit" martial artists, one of "underground" fighters, who meet in tournament once a year, and one man who learns what it is to work hard and try to be the best he can be through submission grappling.

This movie has attracted the attention and participation of people from all angles of the NYC-area wrestling and martial arts scene, including multi-disciplinary black belts and champion fighters, famous pro wrestlers, and highly active people in the underground wrestling scene. Is has attracted sponsorship from the Sprawl fight shorts company and the Long Island Meadery. It already has several screening dates lined up, and will be submitted to festivals like the Brick Theater's "Fight Fest." and the Royal Flush film festival.

The thing is, I don't have enough camera people for the coverage I need. I need two this Saturday , Sunday and next Sunday, and three next Saturday. I have one this Saturday and next Sunday, and none this Sunday and next Saturday.

A sound man and some PA's would always be nice too, and I will make do with what I can get.

This is an all-volunteer production, but I will cover reasonable expenses (travel, blank tape, etc) and provide food on shoot days.

If you can help me, please contact me at zorikh@juno.com. This movie has got too much potential to not do right!
New Independent Film Website

For the last year I've been working on a website for Independent Filmmakers and people who love Independent Film. Its called Reel Connect (www.reelconnect.com) and over the last few months its grown to have quite a few good independent films. If you have an independent film you've made, feel free to upload it to the site (for free) or just go and watch independent films. The site really focuses on the people behind independent films (everyone who works on the film can be listed as part of the cast and crew, and everyone has a profile) I'd love to hear what you guys think of the site, how it can be improved or any other comments or suggestions you might have. Thanks.

I have some good news to share. "The Christmas Card", the Hallmark movie I played the diner waitress 'Molly' in, is now available on DVD through Netflix, Blockbuster, Borders, amazon.com and others. Amazon gave us a 5 star rating and has posted some lovely reviews. Ed Asner was nominated for an Emmy for his outstanding performance in the movie earlier this year. Cast and crew are all thrilled! It's a wonderful holiday gift for the entire family.
;-)
Also, A few weeks ago I did a Slingbox commercial which should air very soon during Monday night football. I play a nervous dental patient in this one. Very funny stuff.

I have a project that is in it's infancy. I am just waiting on the go ahead. It's a documentary about a very popular high school cover band from the 70's that may be getting together for a 30 year reunion. This wasn't your ordinary "Kids in a band" band. They literally toured the entire New england area. Fans traveled from different towns and sometimes states to see them play. Some girls even ran away from home and camped on the drummer's front lawn. Then in 1978, the band broke up and they were never together in the same room again .... Until this year when it was proposed they do a 30 year reunion. One show. I, admittedly do not know about documentary film, but I do believe this is a good story... Primarily because it isn't whether or not these guys were good or are good... They generate an energy that is infectious when they are together... It's a good time and it would be a good documentary.

accordi @ DISACCORDI Open Air Cinema Festival

The Open-air Film Festival, held yearly for at least two months, showcases the best of European and International Cinema. This Outdoor Film Festival counts this year its eighth, will take place from June 29th until September 9th 2007, and with the attendance of over 30,000 viewers screens features, documentaries, shorts, pocket movies and music videos.

The projections start at 9.10 pm and last until full night; open air screenings rise in Arena * Parco del POGGIO * (HILL Park), the fabulous and picturesque site near the Capodimonte Area in Naples / Napoli NA Italy.

It’s a special delight in order to enjoy cinema beneath the stars on warm summer nights in an amphiteatre equipped with one of the widest projection screens in Italy, which rises up having an artificial lake all around. These events really make people revive the movies each night of the Festival!

The admittance price is very cheap: Euro 3.50 per day. Details of films shown as part of the screening programs will be released and available for this Open-air Film Festival at the end of June 2007 on the official website.

Premier of Stoner's Run @ the Parkway Theater

Attention everyone. I am an Oakland filmmaker and I want to announce the premier of my first feature length film, "Stoner's Run" at the historic Parkway Theater. Please mark you calendars and support you local filmmakers.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 14th 9:15pm
Parkway Theater
1834 Park Blvd.
Oakland, CA 94606
Admission: $3

Come to the screening and meet the cast and crew of this no-budget indie film. And if you had the fortune or misfortune to work on this film, come see the fruits of our labor. Stoner's Run is what indie filmmaking is all about. No money. Just vision, heart and commitment.

"Stoner's Run" is about a modern day stoner who has it all. But while partying with his friends one weekend, it all comes crashing down. While trying to score some weed, Bradley and his friends set off for some good times, adventure, and of course, weed. Little do they know that they have caught the attention of narcoticsofficers who are hungry for a bust. This little adventure will turn into a journey of epic insignificance and we learn that the good times aren’t always so good.

I just bought a Glide cam V-16...So far so good...I just got it in yesterday so I'm not too familiar with it...Dose anyone that has experience operating these have any tips for quick set up(Balancing, quick release plate?) and break down of the unit...I'm looking to be able to use the glide cam, then switch to the tripod and still have the option of going back to the glide cam(quickly if possiable)...And I'm sure you probably know if you've bought anything from glide cam, they don't give you much in the way of hardware options for mounting...Right now in order for me to mount/dismount the cam I have to remove the main(sled)plate and weight plates(moving it out of balance) and then screw the cam in/out, then redo the plates and adjustments to get it balanced right...There's gotta be a quicker way!!!!....Thanx all....one

Help bring an indie film to the big screen...

Hi,

I'm helping to promote the indie film, East Broadway. The writer/director/star, Fay Ann Lee, is working hard right now to get a distribution deal to get the film in theaters and needs emails to print and take along to a meeting with a distributor THIS Wednesday (10/18/06). If you have a moment, please check out the website: http://www.eastbroadwaythemovie.com and if the film appeals to you, please follow the instructions below from an email Fay recently sent out. Also, even if the film is not your cup of tea, please, please pass this info along to anyone whom you think might like it!

Thanks a million.
E.S. Putnam

****

EB is now at a critical juncture. We've been approached by an interested distributor who is asking me to show them a fan base. So, here is how you can help --

Tell 5 of your friends about East Broadway and ask them to check out the website. If they think this film is something they might enjoy, have them write to eastbroadwaymovie@gmail.com to tell us that. We need to show that this is a movie with broad appeal. If I get enough support through word-of-mouth, we will be able to get this movie released. But time is of the essence. I need to basically print out a ton of e-mails in the next 4 days so that I can take them to a meeting early next week.

And, if you can, please write to us with the following important information:

1. Where are you from? (so that we can show where else other than NY/L.A. we would release the film)
2. Why does this film appeal to you?
3. Do you think this film would be appealing to your friends and family?
4. Tell your friends to keep introducing the film to 5 friends and have them write to us at eastbroadwaymovie@gmail.com

Again, your e-mails have been a wonderful surprise and so very much welcomed. This grassroots campaigning becomes the most important marketing strategy of all for independent films, so thank you all for being a huge part of this momentum.

Understanding the current immigration crisis requires more than can be summed up in one article or TV news segment. CROSSING ARIZONA - a hit at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival - is the only film that tells the story of how the debate reached the intensity it has today from the inside out, through an intimate and far reaching look at the debate as it has developed over two years at its hottest point - along the Arizona/Sonora border - providing context and depth to the news headlines.

Heightened security along the Texas and California borders funnels an estimated 4,500 undocumented migrants, most traveling on foot, into remote sectors of the Arizona desert on a daily basis. The perilous journey, which can take up to four days, has led to the deaths of thousands of migrants. The influx of migrants and rising death toll has elicited impassioned responses and complicated feelings about human rights, culture, class and national security. Through the eyes of frustrated ranchers, local activists, desperate migrants, and the Minutemen who've become darlings of the national media, CROSSING ARIZONA reveals the surprising political stances people take when immigration and border policy fails everyone.

RHAPSODY!
This film has surpassed my expectations. An example of perseverance in the face of adversity, not the film but the journey it took to make this short. Where others were willing to walk away, I wasn't. I saw the potential and needed to bring it to fruition. With the undeniable expertise of Alex Studer and the added sound by Regan and of course the very talented, Marie Roux... Rhapsody will not only be completed, but the film is festival worthy. See the trailer, click on the link below.

I have a short film story that I think is significant to the not only the art of film but rights and freedom of expression.

A 17 year old student of West Linn High in Oregon was expelled due to a film project he presented to class. The 10 min short film called “Brockenback High” It is about a highschool jock/football player, Jess, that is struggling with his sexuality, he befriends a new kid in school, Ethan. As they develop their friendship, Ethan openly admits to Jess that he is gay. Ethan at first is angry and upset but realizes that he is also gay and needs to accept it.

Synopsis: Jeff has it all. A devoted girlfriend, athletic ability, good looks; and when he and the new kid at school are paired up for a class assignment, he gains the greatest friendship of his life. But when he discovers that his new best friend Ethan is gay, he is forced to question their friendship, his relationships, and the fundamental truths of who he is himself.

This is a well done film and in no way discriminates or depicts homosexuality in a negative way. It’s a film about self discovery and friendship.

Brandon Flyte is the writer, director and actor in the film and you can see a clip of the movie on www.brandonflyte.com, but the site is currently down due to the mass amount of traffic from people downloading the film.

You can read more about Brandon on www.myspace.com/branakin

Film-Making in Canada

Actually, I'm in Edmonton, Alberta and I've noticed that here in particular, networking with fellow film-makers you don't already know seems to be near impossible. I've seen work that's been produced from here so I know there's a hidden community somewhere...but I can't seem to hook up with these people.

So if you're in Canada...or Alberta....or in Edmonton, lemme know! :)

GALAXIE PICTURES is currently developing 'Unfiltered', the directorial debut for Creighton Vero, screenwriter of the indie cult hit 'Spun'.

For more information contact: pete@galaxie-pictures.com

SYNOPSIS:

Teenage Sherri, a new arrival to Lake Charles, Louisiana, gets a rude awakening as the locals give her a slice of real Southern hospitality, small town style. Included in her Lake Charles initiation are some hard lessons on friendship, family, and bigotry—not the kind made of ephemeral remarks and incidental ostracizing of outsiders, but real and vicious institutional racism, the kind that ends in murder.

Sherri arrives as the locals prepare for the funeral of Mary, the town’s Contraband Days Celebration Queen. With her death begins the shattering of the perfect picture of southern hospitality that she represents. Grieving is glossed over in favor of panic about the town’s quickly evaporating marijuana supply. What’s really died is the smiling welcoming south, and its warmth and hospitality are quickly replaced by a rapid growth of weeds.

Then the ensemble cast of Unfiltered gradually unwinds into a hard picture of gritty southern life as facades of tolerance gradually peel / crumble away. What’s revealed is the stuff that’s usually swept under the carpet.

Download my film

I've actually made a film once. It's now available for download (650mb, xvid format) at it's site:

http://www.deathofcain.com

there's also a new forum there. I think I'd actually like to hear what people have to say about it. I warn you, though: It's 46 minutes, without dialogue, presenting a twisted adaptation of the Biblical tale of Cain and Abel - and has sheep in it (they're actually quite good, the sheep).

Basically, it all spun from two verses which leaped out to me from the original text: One is what God says to Eve, in Genesis 3 - "in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee". The second is what God says to Cain, in Genesis 4 - "sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him". If you take these two verses and compare them, you get a strange equation: God said to woman that her desire is for man and he shall rule over her - God said to man sin will desire him and he shall rule over sin. This kind puts woman and sin together, no? And if you compare the beginning of the verses - the act of sin is the act of bringing children, the act of Godliness taken away from God by Man. So that's where it all started.

Lemme know. 10x.

Looking for Short Film Submissions

Attention aspiring film makers and hobby film makers...

We are currently looking for aspiring film makers/hobby film makers who have completed short films they have produced and would like to get more exposure for their work.

We produce a live TV show which features short films, comedy sketches, and live acts. Also- if we get enough submissions we'll be putting together several short film collections to air. The program is currently aired on 2 cable systems in the Washington DC area- one of them is one of the largest cable systems in the country.

Here are the rules:
- Films may be on any subject and of any genre (Comedy, drama, music video, art/abstract, etc).
- Films should be between 1 minute and 50 minutes in length total, including credits.
- Films may contain course language.
- Films may contain nudity, but may NOT contain porn-like material. (We don't mind the porn, but it's not getting on the air.)
- All films remain the property of their makers/owners. We only need permission to run them.
- Submissions will NOT be returned. Please for the love of all that's holy - DO NOT SEND US YOUR MASTERS/ONLY COPY!!
- Films are chosen by a small panel of judges and are chosen for quality, entertainment value, and other criteria. We're pretty open-minded and feel like everyone should be given a chance to have their work seen. Films will sometimes not be chosen for a particular program due to length/time availability. Those omitted due to time restrictions will be considered for the next program/episode.

- Deadline: Although we accept films on a continuous basis, the deadline for the next program is December 1st. Films received after December 1st will be considered for the next program/episode.

- We accept submissions in the following NTSC (US) formats:
Digital Betacam
DVC-Pro
DVCam (No 4 channel audio)
Full-size DV (SP only, No 4 channel audio)
Mini-DV (SP only)

- Make sure all TAPES AND CASES are labeled with your name, phone number and email address. We will need to contact you before your film airs.

- Submissions should be mailed to:
Late Night Monkey Theater
c/o FPA
2929 Eskridge Road, Suite S
Fairfax, VA 22031

If you have any questions please email us: monkeyshow@verizon.net

We hope to see your submissions soon! Thanks!
